    What Are Printable Magnets?

Printable magnets are flexible magnetic sheets with a specially prepared surface that accepts ink from commercial and industrial printing equipment. The base material is the same ferrite-and-rubber compound used in standard flexible magnets, but the top layer is laminated with a facestock chosen to work with a specific ink system and press type.

You can print on the resulting magnetic substrate directly, producing finished products like vehicle signs, refrigerator magnets, business card magnets, point-of-sale graphics, menu boards, calendars, and promotional pieces. Once printed and cut, printable magnet sheets attach to any ferrous metal surface and can be removed and repositioned without leaving residue.

For print shops and sign makers, printable magnets represent a way to expand your product offering and keep magnetic print jobs in-house rather than outsourcing them. For retailers and marketing teams, they provide a cost-effective way to produce branded materials that stay visible wherever your customers place them.

Facestock Options: Matching Material to Your Ink and Press

Choosing the right printable magnetic sheet starts with your printing process. The facestock determines ink adhesion, color vibrancy, durability, and whether the finished product is suited for indoor or outdoor use.

    Vinyl

Vinyl-laminated printable magnet sheets are the most versatile option for commercial sign and graphics work. They’re compatible with solvent, eco-solvent, latex, and UV-curable inks, and they hold up well outdoors. Vinyl facestock is available in matte and gloss finishes.

For vehicle magnets and outdoor signage, vinyl is the standard choice because it resists moisture, UV exposure, and temperature swings from -15°F to 160°F.

    Polypropylene

Polypropylene facestock provides smooth feeding and strong ink adhesion for digital production presses. It’s a good fit for indoor signage, promotional magnets, and point-of-sale materials where a clean, professional surface finish matters. Polypropylene is also used on DigiMag® PLUS sheets certified for HP Indigo and Kodak NexPress presses.

    Paper

Paper-laminated printable magnet sheets work with aqueous inkjet printers and some digital presses. They produce sharp image quality for indoor applications like refrigerator magnets, calendars, photo magnets, and mailers. Paper facestock is not recommended for outdoor use, as it is susceptible to moisture damage.

Not sure which facestock is right for your press? Refer to our Printer and Magnetic Sheet Compatibility Chart, or contact our team. We’ll match your printer model and ink type to the correct printable magnet product.

Sheets or Rolls: Ordering in the Format You Need

Rochester Magnet sells printable magnetic sheets in both cut-sheet and roll formats, with standard and custom sizing options.

    • Cut Sheets: Common sizes include 8.5″ x 11″, 12″ x 18″, 12″ x 24″, and 20″ x 24″, with widths up to 48″. If a standard size doesn’t match your press sheet or finished trim, we can cut to your exact dimensions.
    • Rolls: Standard lengths include 25 ft, 50 ft, 100 ft, and 200 ft, in widths up to 48″. Custom roll lengths up to 1,800 ft are available depending on width and thickness.
    • Thickness: Available from .008″ to .060″. Thinner materials (.008″ to .015″) work well for mailers and lightweight promotional magnets. For vehicle signs, the industry standard is .030″ (or .015″ in high-energy formulations)

Magnetized vs. Unmagnetized: Which Should You Order?

Rochester Magnet offers all printable magnet products in both magnetized and unmagnetized configurations. The choice depends on your production workflow and press setup.

    Magnetized Before Printing

The sheet arrives ready to use. After printing and cutting, the finished product is magnetic with no additional processing steps. This is the simplest option if your press can handle pre-magnetized material without feeding issues. Keep in mind that magnetized sheets may attract to metal press components, so check your printer’s feed path for potential interference.

    Unmagnetized (Magnetize After Printing)

Unmagnetized sheets feed through presses more easily because they won’t stick to metal platens or rollers. After printing and cutting, you run the finished pieces through a magnetizer to activate the magnetic properties. This approach gives you more flexibility in press setup and is preferred by many high-volume print operations.

    Magnetizers

Rochester Magnet sells magnetizers in several configurations to match your production volume:

    • Motorized Magnetizer: A good option for volume jobs on a regular or semi-regular basis. Low maintenance, reliable, and built for repeated use with no belts to replace.
    • Portable Desktop Magnetizer: An economical solution for small jobs. Compact enough to store when not in use, durable enough for ongoing production.
    • Handheld Magnetizer: Provides an option for occasional and low-volume jobs where a full magnetizer setup isn’t justified.
    • In-Line Magnetization Systems: Custom-built for integration into your specific printing process, providing continuous magnetization as part of your production line.

Ask about Rochester Magnet’s try-and-buy program: we’ll ship a magnetizer with your first order so you can test the workflow in your facility before committing to a purchase.

Tips for Printing on Magnetic Sheets

Not sure how to print on magnetic sheets? Here are a few tips from 25+ years on the job:

    • Match facestock to ink: Vinyl works with solvent, eco-solvent, latex, and UV inks. Paper works with aqueous inks. Polypropylene works with toner-based digital presses.
    • Feed sheets flat: Magnetic sheets can retain a slight curl from the roll. Let them flatten before feeding, and load cut sheets one at a time.
    • Create an air gap on metal-platen printers: A simple spacer prevents magnetic material from sticking during transport.
    • Use the correct print profile: Follow the ICC profile and curing settings from the facestock manufacturer. Incorrect curing temps can warp or shrink the material.

Allow prints to dry before stacking: Freshly printed sheets can transfer ink if stacked too soon, especially with aqueous and latex inks

Add Printable Magnets to Your Product Line

Whether you run a print shop looking to bring magnetic printing in-house, or you're a retailer sourcing branded magnetic materials, Rochester Magnet has the products and expertise to support your workflow. Frequently Asked Questions About Printable Magnets

Yes, for certain products. DigiMag® PLUS supports double-sided digital printing. For other products, double-sided printing depends on thickness and press compatibility. Sheets over .030″ thick can also be double-side magnetized. Contact our team to discuss your specific two-sided printing requirements.

Start with our Printer and Magnetic Sheet Compatibility Chart, which maps printer types and ink systems to compatible products. If your printer isn’t listed, contact our team with your printer model, ink type, and maximum media thickness. We can recommend a product or help you run a test with sample material.

Unmagnetized sheets can be stored indefinitely in a cool, dry environment without any degradation to the magnetic material or facestock. Once printed, they can be magnetized at any time using a compatible magnetizer.
