How a Magnetic Door Catch Works

Every magnetic door catch has two halves:  

  1. The catch body, which houses the magnet, mounts to the frame or cabinet interior. 
  2. The strike plate, a piece of ferrous steel, mounts to the door itself. 

When the door swings shut, the magnet pulls the plate against it, holding the door in place until someone applies enough force to break the connection. Holding force comes from the magnet material and the contact between the two faces. 

A catch reaches its rated strength only when the strike plate sits flush against the magnet with no gap. Even a small offset from a misaligned hinge or a thick coat of paint reduces the hold.

Some designs go a step further. A touch latch adds a spring mechanism so a light push releases the door, which is useful on handleless cabinetry. Concealed catches mount inside a bored hole, so nothing shows when the door is closed.

    Ceramic and alnico catches cover most residential cabinetry, where a few pounds of hold is plenty for a lightweight door. Neodymium makes a heavy-duty magnetic door catch possible in a small body, since rare-earth material produces roughly five to seven times the force of ceramic at the same size. That strength lets a concealed catch hold a solid-core door without a visible housing. 

    Published pull ratings assume ideal conditions. In practice, plan for a real-world hold to come in below the rating, and size the catch with a margin above what the door actually needs.

    Housing material decides where a catch can be applied:  

    • Nylon and ABS bodies suit dry interior cabinetry and keep costs down at volume. 
    • Steel and zinc-plated housings add durability for commercial and industrial use. 
    • Stainless steel is the choice anywhere moisture is present, which is why marine and RV builders specify it almost exclusively.

    The magnet itself needs protection, too. For washdown areas, salt air, or outdoor enclosures, ask us about a sealed housing with a coating rated for the exposure.

    Magnetic Catch Mounting Options

    How the catch attaches influences both the look and the installation time.

    • Surface mount is the standard for cabinets. The body screws to the frame or shelf, the plate screws to the door, and installation takes a couple of minutes per door.
    • Concealed and press-fit catches drop into a bored hole so the hardware disappears when the door shuts. Common on fine furniture, display cases, and architectural millwork.
    • Adhesive mounts work where drilling is not an option, such as on glass, laminate, and finished panels. Pressure-sensitive adhesive backing bonds the magnet or plate directly to the surface.
    • Channel and cup mounts encase the magnet in a steel channel or cup that focuses the field toward the strike face, increasing the effective hold of the same magnet.

    Installation Considerations for Magnetic Latches and Catches

    There are a few details that separate a catch that holds for a decade from one that gets replaced.

    1. Set Alignment First: Mount the catch body, close the door, and let the strike plate find its own position before you drive the second screw. Most plates have slotted holes for exactly this reason.
    2. Account for the Gap: Pull force drops sharply as the distance between the magnet and plate grows. A gap of even one sixteenth of an inch can cut hold significantly.
    3. Match the Plate to the Magnet: A thin or undersized strike plate saturates and wastes available force. Use the plate supplied with the catch, or specify a thicker steel plate for high-force applications.
    4. Consider the Door Weight and Swing: A tall door with a long lever arm needs more hold at the latch point than a small cabinet door of the same weight.
    5. Plan for Temperature: Standard neodymium loses strength above roughly 80°C. Near ovens, engines, or process equipment, specify a high-temperature grade or an alnico catch.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Magnetic Door Hardware

    Not under normal use. A neodymium or ceramic magnet kept within its temperature rating loses a fraction of a percent of strength per decade. Catches that stop holding have almost always developed an alignment problem, a debris buildup on the strike face, or a loose mounting screw rather than a weak magnet.

    Standard catches are not. A child can pull most cabinet catches open. For cabinets holding cleaning chemicals or medication, use a purpose-built magnetic safety lock, which uses a hidden magnetic key to release an internal latch and works on a different principle than a holding catch.

    The fields around a typical cabinet catch fall off quickly with distance and pose no risk to phones, laptops, or modern credit cards at normal handling distances. Anyone with a pacemaker or implanted defibrillator should keep a safe distance from strong rare earth hardware, and manufacturers integrating high-force magnets near sensitive instrumentation should test for interference during design.
